Narrative

RESEARCH: Prior Tolman Family Genealogist from Judson & Myra Tolman Patterson to Fred & Arlene Kelly Tolman, William Odell Tolman, LoaDon Hofhine Glade (1988), Pauline Hanks Christiansen and Loraine Tolman Pace.

BIOGRAPHY: It is possible to follow the moves of the Nathan Tolman Family through the buying and selling of property. There are four deeds recorded in the Kennebec County, Maine, Record of Deeds: (1) He was of Hope, Maine, when he bought property in Windsor, Maine, 13 Apr 1827, Deeds of 1826-1827, vol. 60, p. 177/8 (film FHL #0011102). This verifies Hope as the birthplace of his son Judson. (2) He was of Windsor when he sold property 13 Nov 1828, vol 75, p. 163 (film FHL #0011111). (3) He was of Windsor when he sold property 23 Mar 1837, Deeds of 1837, vol. 103, p. 287 (film FHL 30011130). (4) He was in Van Buren County, Iowa, (which was then Wisconsin Territory) on 20 Mar 1838 when he appointed Benjamin Hewitt his attorney for the 1837 Windsor property sale - Deeds 1838, vol. 109, p. 124 (film FHL #0011133). He was living in Van Buren County, Iowa, on 13 May 1842, when he and his son John signed an agreement and deed that John agreed to take care of Nathan and family in exchange for home and property, found in Van Buren County, Iowa, Land & Property Records, Book D, p. 148/49 (film FHL #0966251). The agreement and deed was recorded 18 May 1843. (When Nathan and Sarah's children were born Hope, Maine was in Lincoln County but Hope is now in Knox County.)

BIRTH: Vital Records of Hope, Maine, Prior to 1892, photocopy of original records (book FHL #974.153/H1 V2v, family list p. 84). Barrettstown (Hope) Town Book 1790-1830, from Daughters of the American Revolution Library (film FHL #0859056, item 1, typewrtten copy of family list p. 16). Vital Records of Windsor, Maine, 1817-1859, photocopy of original records (film FHL #0010401, 1st Section - family list p. 117)
There are differences in various records as where Nathan was born - Warren, Lincoln, Maine or Barrettstown (now Hope), Waldo, Maine. It should be noted that Waldo County wasn't formed until 1827 out of Hancock County, which was formed in 1789, the year after Nathan's birth. Hancock County was formed from Lincoln County, which was formed in 1760. So, technically, Nathan was born in Lincoln County, which at that time was in Massachusetts. "Annals of Warren" by Cyrus Eaton, p. 230 indicate that in 1785 his father, Reuben, came to Warren and in 1802/05 removed to Hope/ Barrettstown; 1790 and 1800 Federal Census of Maine lists his father in Warren;

MARRIAGE: Vital Records of Hope, Maine, Marriages 1808-1885 (film FHL #0010935, p. 4 or 974.153/H1 V2v, p. 94).

DEATH: Letter from Lucy Tolman Brannen Bishop to her daughter, Desdemonia Brannen Smith, giving her mother Sarah's and father Nathan's death dates. Letter dated 5 Nov 1891 in Lucy's file at the Thomas Tolman Family Genealogy Center, Bountiful, Utah; It was believed at one time (When William Odell Tolman was family genealogist) that Nathan and Sarah may have died at Turkey Creek, S.E. of Atlantic, Cass, Iowa;

TEMPLE: Logan Temple Records - baptisms (film #0177844, p. 481), endowment (film #0177957, p. 149), Endowment House Records - sealing to spouse, (Special Collections film #0183398, Book H, p. 340); Salt Lake Temple Records - sealing to parents, (Special Collections film #1239604 or 0184652, p. 302). This includes his sealing to his parents and his children to him. International Genealogical Index.
